Leicester
is a cosmopolitan city with its many cultures reflected in its
restaurants, clubs, shops and festivals. The 700 year old market is one
of the largest covered markets in Europe. The city centre and other
areas provide a wide choice of shops. Students make up over 10% of the
population in term time, giving the city a vibrant and youthful feel.
This is reflected in a wide choice of social and leisure facilities
including many continental style café bars, lively clubs and
pubs.
The
University's reputation for physics and space science helped Leicester
gain the National Space Science Centre. It includes the Challenger
Learning Centre, the first such centre outside North America which has
recently opened on a site adjacent to the University.
Leicester
is a green city with Victoria Park, which borders the University campus,
and of course the University's Botanic Garden adjacent to the halls of
residence. Further a field there is Rutland Water, Europe's largest
man-made reservoir, which offers windsurfing, canoeing, sailing, fishing
and bird watching.
It is appropriate that in the city where Thomas Cook invented the
holiday excursion, tourism should now support 3,000 jobs.
